Instant Pot Gravy Recipe (3)

Making your own gravy from scratch in the Instant Pot is super easy. I just took my old staple recipe of make-ahead gravy and converted it to the Instant Pot! Yes, “make-ahead” in my gravy recipe name means that it can be made ahead and reheated! No more scrambling to make turkey gravy in front of the hungry guests. Make your life easy by making gravy ahead!

Instant Pot Gravy Recipe (4)

This gravy recipe is so easy and straightforward, even an absolute beginner can make it. And it tastes dramatically better than the gravy from the can or from those gravy packets that come with frozen turkey breast. At this point, I won’t even put the store-bought gravy in my mouth :)

If you looked at the ingredient list of the store-bought canned gravy, it’s truly scary with all those unpronounceable chemicals and stabilizers. Homemade gravy has just 4 ingredients: chicken or turkey stock (or drippings), butter, flour and salt. Clean simple ingredients resulting in clean homemade down-to-earth taste that just hits the spot!

Just as you might add condiments like soy sauce, miso paste, Worcestershire sauce, or even a splash of sherry or cider vinegar to your favorite gravy recipe, incorporate them into store-bought gravy for a more complex flavor. Start by adding just a little at a time, and continue until you reach a flavor you enjoy.

How do you keep gravy warm in the Instant Pot? ›

Turn Instant Pot off and cover with lid. This gravy will stay hot for 3 hours in the Instant Pot. You can also plug your Pot in and use the Slow Cooker function to keep the gravy hot.

Why is my homemade gravy not getting thick? ›

Oftentimes, a thin gravy just needs more time on the stove. You can also use this method if you accidentally overdid it on adding stock to your gravy. Continue to simmer the gravy, uncovered, until enough liquid evaporates to thicken the gravy.

What is the ratio of flour to water to thicken gravy? ›

To use flour as a thickening agent: Use two tablespoons flour mixed with ¼ cup cold water for each cup of medium-thick sauce. Thoroughly mix in the water to prevent lumps. After stirring the combined flour and water into the sauce, cook and stir over medium heat until thickened and bubbly.

How do you keep instant gravy from getting lumpy? ›

Give It a Whirl in a Food Processor

Here's a high-tech lumpy gravy fix: Pour the gravy into a food processor or blender. Press liquefy or whip on a blender; for a food processor, turn it to "on" (not pulse) and use the spinning of the blades to get lumps out of gravy.

What makes gravy more tasty? ›

Bouillon Paste: adding a spoonful of bouillon paste boosts the flavor of homemade gravy. I prefer the Better Than Bouillon brand. If I'm making gravy for chicken or turkey, I use chicken-flavor bouillon (and obviously beef-flavored bouillon for gravy to be served with beef).

What to add to gravy to make it thicker? ›

Similar to flour, cornstarch is another ingredient that can be used to make gravy thicker. With cornstarch, making a slurry is also an option, but with 1 tablespoon of cornstarch whisked into cold water. Again, you'll want to add the slurry in increments so you don't over-thicken the gravy.

Can you leave an Instant Pot on slow cook overnight? ›

If you are slow cooking in the Instant Pot, you should be able to leave your dish cooking overnight for as long as the recipe dictates. Anything that calls for 8 hours cooking time should be sufficient as long as you make sure you're up in time to take it out of the slow cooker once it's finished.

How long can I leave an Instant Pot on to keep warm? ›

Instant Pot also switches to a “warm” setting when it's done cooking, keeping food at a safe temperature for up to 10 hours.

How do you thicken sauce in Instant Pot without cornstarch? ›

If you don't have any cornstarch, you can also use flour and make a beurre manie, which is fancy French for “flour butter paste” or “raw roux.” To make this little ball of thickening magic, just take equal masses of flour and butter, and mash it all up into a little paste nugget.

How do you thicken broth in an Instant Pot? ›

Whisk the cornstarch slurry in to the juices (it is a good idea stir the slurry just before adding to the juices as the cornstarch will have most likely settled). Stir constantly until the juices have thickened, approximately 3 – 5 minutes. Select Cancel to stop the cooking process.

How do you reduce the liquid in an Instant Pot? ›

When a recipe turns out a little too saucy, you can ladle out some of the liquid, or cook it off using the “Sauté” or “Slow Cook” function. Then, the next time you make the recipe in an Instant Pot, reduce the liquid by ½ to 1 cup. This one's easy: Just add a little water or broth to adjust the consistency.
