You just reminded me that I have not made applesauce in a while. Even though it is pretty warm outside, my kids and I love to eat it in the summer. I usually make it in the crock, we eat some while it’s warm and I put the rest in single serve containers in the refrigerator. That way, anyone can grab it as a snack when ever!

    FAQs

Is homemade applesauce better than store-bought? ›

"The store-bought has a gritty, almost sawdusty texture and a weird aftertaste." Make it. Store-bought applesauce doesn't hold a candle to the richly flavored, silky, tangy homemade. Invest a little bit of time in cooking it from scratch, and you can freeze or can enough leftovers to make the fruit of your labor last.

How to make store-bought applesauce taste homemade? ›

Start by toasting a half-teaspoon of your favorite ground baking spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, allspice) in a small skillet over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until fragrant. Transfer to a small bowl to stop the cooking, then stir in a pinch or two of the spice into your applesauce, adding more to taste.

How long does homemade applesauce stay good in the refrigerator? ›

After you have popped the seal and placed your opened jar of apple sauce in the fridge, it will stay fresh for anywhere between 7-14 days. Homemade apple sauce has a shorter shelf life, ranging from 4-6 days.

What are the benefits of applesauce? ›

The soluble fiber in applesauce, in the form of pectin, can be helpful in treating digestive issues, such as diarrhea and constipation. It can help to neutralize the effects of irritable bowel syndrome. Pectin also acts as a prebiotic, which feeds good gut bacteria and promotes good digestive health.

Is store bought apple sauce good for you? ›

The answer is a resounding yes! Apple sauce is low in calories, fat-free, and contains beneficial vitamins and minerals. Apples are packed with fiber, which helps keep you feeling full and aids in digestion. They also contain antioxidants, which can help protect against chronic diseases.

What are the best store bought apples for applesauce? ›

(You can also go for classic, if that's your style!) In each, I recommend using either Golden Delicious or Fuji apples. They are naturally sweet, necessitating less additional sugar. To help you decide which you'd like to use if you don't already have a favorite, we can cover a couple of the basic facts of each.

Can you leave homemade applesauce out overnight? ›

The USDA says food that has been left out of the fridge for more than two hours should be thrown away. At room temperature, bacteria grows incredibly fast and can make you sick. Reheating something that has been sitting at room temperature for longer than two hours won't be safe from bacteria.

Why is my homemade applesauce watery? ›

    Why is my applesauce watery?
    • The apples you put into the sauce could be extremely juicy, giving you a higher water content than the recipe anticipated.
    • The apples could be larger than usual, or you might not have had the heat on the stovetop high enough or left the sauce to stew for long enough.

Why does my homemade applesauce taste bitter? ›

If too much ground cinnamon is added, it can give your applesauce a bitter taste. Since the loose powder form of cinnamon has a higher flavor concentration than the stick, it ends up overpowering the flavor profile of applesauce. Moreover, ground cinnamon gives the applesauce a rather 'muddy' look.

How to tell if applesauce is bad? ›

Mold is an obvious sign of spoilage, and the applesauce should be discarded immediately. What does it smell like? A quick whiff that gives off a sweet scent of applesauce means it is probably still good. If there is an unpleasant odor, you're likely smelling spoiled applesauce, so go ahead and toss it out.

What is the best way to store homemade applesauce? ›

Package applesauce in freezer-safe containers, such as freezer-safe plastic that won't crack at freezing temperatures, canning jars or other tempered glass jars with straight rather than tapered necks that won't crack in the freezer, or thick zipper-style plastic bags designed for freezer use.
