Detoxifying Herbal Gelatin Gummies (THM-friendly!) (2)

It’s time to get serious about our health again after the holidays!

How? One way is to eat foods that support our bodies’ natural detox processes. You’re probably thinking detox soups and teas, right?

Well… no. Let’s mix it up a little with Detoxifying Herbal Gelatin Gummies instead! These little gems are perfect for busy, on-the-go days when bone broth isn’t as convenient. They make a delicious snack or light dessert. Plus, kiddos love them!

Feel free to try my recipe below, or tweak it a little to create your own personalized twist. You’ll need just 4 simple ingredients!

#1 — Detoxifying Herbal Tea

Creation is replete with beneficial herbs that support our body’s natural detox system. If you already have a favorite detoxifying herbal tea blend, use it!

I’ve chosen 3 of my favorite herbs — stinging nettle, red raspberry leaf, and red hibiscus. Each one contains vitamins and minerals that support the liver and kidneys, help the bowels function well (don’t worry, you won’t be running to the bathroom 😉 ), fight free radicals, and support the immune system.

#2 — Berries

Antioxidant-rich blueberries pair well with red hibiscus. They’re high in vitamin C and contain beneficial phytochemicals, such as anthocyanins, which fight free radicals and help strengthen cell walls.

Try to find wild blueberries — they contain twice as much antioxidant power as their tamer, farmed cousins (source). Or, use any berries that complement your choice of herbal tea!

#3 — Lemon Juice

Lemon juice, also rich in Vitamin C and other antioxidants, is a powerful detoxifying agent. It gives these gelatin gummies a lovely tartness.

#4 — Grass-Fed Gelatin

Of course, you can’t make gelatin squares without gelatin! This superfood is more than just the “glue” that holds all these naturally detoxifying ingredients together. It contains an important amino acid:

Glycine, an amino acid found in gelatin, helps the body to detoxify.Along with cysteine and glutamine, glycine gets converted to glutathione which is the antioxidant that aids the liver in its detoxification work. (Source.)

Bone broth is, of course, one of the best detoxifying substances around. It’s a great source of gelatin and its amino acids! But, including these detoxifying gelatin squares into your healthy diet is also helpful.

#5 — Optional Sweeteners (Unrefined Or Low-Glycemic)

If the sweetness of the berries is enough for you, feel free to skip any additional sweetener!

If you’d like your gelatin squares to be a little more sweet, choose an unrefined sweetener like raw, local honey or maple syrup. Allow the mixture to cool a bit before adding the raw honey so as not to destroy the heat-sensitive properties of this liquid gold.

If you’re a Trim Healthy Mama plan follower, choose a low-glycemic sweetener such as pure stevia extract (or try making your own liquid version). That makes these little detoxing gems a Fuel Pull (zero fat and very little carbs) so you can snack on them throughout the day! I’ve been known to grab one every time I open the fridge. Or walk by it… Not gonna lie. 😉

Now that you’re armed with the info you need, let’s make these healthy, natural Detoxifying Herbal Gelatin Gummies!

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, add 1 cup cool water.

  2. Sprinkle gelatin over the water. Let bloom.

  3. Combine 1 cup boiling water and dried herbs in a mug or Mason jar.

  4. Let brew.

  5. Meanwhile, add blueberries and remaining 1 cup of cool water to blender.

  6. Purée until as liquefied as possible.

  7. If desired, strain the berry purée through a fine mesh sieve for a smoother, more "jello"-like texture. Or, use the purée as-is, but keep in mind it may have a somewhat grainy texture depending on how powerful your blender is.

  8. Set aside purée.

  9. Strain brewed tea into the saucepan where the gelatin is.

  10. Heat over low to medium heat, if necessary, to completely dissolve the gelatin.

  11. Once dissolved, immediately remove from heat.

  12. Add lemon juice, sea salt, and blueberry purée. Stir well to combine.

  13. If desired, add sweetener of choice. Allow mixture to cool to lukewarm before adding raw honey.

  14. Taste to adjust sweetness/tartness. Add more sweetener or lemon juice, if desired.

  15. Pour into silicone molds or an 8x8" baking dish.

  16. Refrigerate until firm (about 2 to 3 hours), then cut into squares. If using a mold, you may need to put the bottom of the mold in some hot water first to loosen them before removing.

I agree Maggie, the process is a bit confusing. But from what I’m understanding, you add a cup of cool water to your pan and add the gelatin and set it aside. Then you take a cup of boiling water and add it and your herbs to a jar or cup and let it steep to make your tea. Now, in your blender or food processor you combine your fruit and a cup of cool water and puree. Strain your tea and add it to your gelatin and heat until the gelatin is completely dissolved. After the gelatin is dissolved then add your other ingredients. Thank you for asking this question because I was a little confused too but after reading your question and seeing that it was not answered I went back and read over the instructions again, more slowly until I thought I understood them.

These detox gummies are absolutely delicious! My friends loved it too! Even though I used blueberries, my friends said it reminded them of cranberry sauce. Hmmm…maybe I will use cranberries next time!
