Shirley Ballas has shared a major update regarding a health scare she experienced. The Strictly Come Dancing judge, who is also DWTS alum Mark Ballas’ mom, took to Instagram on April 30 to reveal that she is cancer-free.

After thanking fans for their support, Shirley outlined a series of tests she had undergone before noting that the results came back clear. “Thank you to you all for your well wishes following my two mammograms, one ultrasound and three biopsies last week,” she wrote. “I am feeling blessed to share that my results have come back all clear – there is no cancer present.” The British television personality admitted that opening up about her health journey “triggered” her emotions, but added: “It’s only right for me to share both the highs and lows of life … If I was able to help just one lady, then sharing my picture was worth it.”

The update comes a few days after Shirley shared a photo of herself sporting bandages on her Instagram Story. “Urging all women do not miss your mammogram. I went for mine, ended up going for a second one and a biopsy. Local anesthetic biopsy done. Now waiting for results,” she said, adding that she was inspired by Strictly Come Dancing pro Amy Dowden to get tested. Amy was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in May 2023 and documented her cancer battle on social media. This February, the pro dancer revealed that her own scans came back clear and she is now officially cancer-free. “Amy Dowden you ran through my mind. The importance of not putting it off. Go and get tested. Plus self breast check regularly,” Shirley wrote. Amy reshared the post, adding: “Always here for you! Important message here all from @shirleyballas.”

Shirley is a legend in the ballroom dancing world. Dubbed the “Queen of Latin,” she began dancing at just 7 years old and won several major championships over the course of her career. While partnered with Sammy Stopford, whom she was married to from 1980 to 1984, she won the Open to the World British Dance Championships in the Latin category. Following their divorce, Shirley married American ballroom dancer Corky Ballas, and together, they won the championship in both 1995 and 1996. To this day, Shirley is the only person to have ever won the championship with two different partners. She retired from dancing in 1997 to become a dance coach and judge for ballroom competitions.

She and Corky were married for over two decades and had one child together, DWTS‘ Mark Ballas, whom they welcomed in 1986. The couple ultimately divorced in 2007. In 2017, Shirley became the head judge on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, replacing the late Len Goodman. At the time, Len stepped down to focus on the show’s American counterpart, Dancing With the Stars. He served as the head judge for 31 seasons before retiring in 2022. Just five months later, Len died on April 22, 2023, following a private battle with bone cancer.

Len and Shirley were very close, and the Strictly Come Dancing judge reacted to the news of his passing on Twitter. “What extremely sad news this morning. As I came off Good Morning Britain I heard of the passing of my dearest friend Len Goodman. My past teacher, a dance legend and a true gentlemen. He was a shining star in the ballroom that everyone loved,” she wrote.

We’re doing good. We’re working through this all … But it’s not easy. I’m alive and we’re working through this, but I’m not even going to apologize if I’m not posting because when I have something really sincere to share, I will do it.”

“If I didn’t have dance, I don’t know how I would deal with all that is going on,” he concluded.
